Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

Isaiah 54:5 prophesies the following about Jesus Christ: “For thy maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is His name; and they Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; the God of the whole earth shall He be called.” Jesus as the Husband of the Church is a remarkable word picture, one that is clarified in Ephesians 5:22-33. Verse 25 says, “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave Himself for it.” Clearly, Jesus shows us the best that a husband can be! A love that willingly gives is difficult; a love that gives sacrificially is divine. We often speak of sacrifice in modern terms; that is, we make it a synonym for self-denial. Now, self-denial is a fine thing. However, sacrifice in Biblical terms meant death. I Corinthians 5:7b is starkly absolute: “For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us.” As the Husband of the Church, Jesus died to save us from our sins. His love has been demonstrated in the most powerful way possible, as He “gave Himself” for us. Such lavish love is stronger than any evil in this world, including the evil of our sin natures. This omnipotent love cannot be reversed, and it will not be revoked.
