Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
Psalm 110 closes with a passage of victory. Verses 5-7 say, “The Lord at Thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of His wrath. He shall judge among the heathen, He shall fill the places with the dead bodies; He shall wound the heads over many countries. He shall drink of the brook in the way: therefore shall He lift up the head.” Some are uncomfortable with the militant and martial language of these words, but we should glory in the beauty of Jesus as our conquering hero. First, remember that the dead body of Jesus was taken from the Cross and placed in a sealed and guarded tomb. Our sin was responsible for His physical and, even worse, spiritual death. Yet, in His crucifixion and resurrection, Jesus defeated our sins and our deserved deaths. If anyone continues to oppose Him, He is certainly not to be blamed. Second, Revelation 19:11-21 provides the details of the final fulfillment of Psalm 110’s Messianic prophecy. This Second Coming of Jesus will occur at Armageddon (Revelation 16:16), the Mount of Megiddo overlooking the plain of Esdraelon, just ten miles as the vulture flies from Jesus’ childhood home of Nazareth. We have been warned for centuries of what will happen if we fight against God. Let us remember that it is men who will challenge the authority of God; He will not initiate the conflict. He will be victorious, and He will remain good throughout His victory.
