Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
We return today to Colossians 2:9-10: “For in Him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in Him, [Who] is the head of all principality and power.” Jesus is the Head of all things, and we should embrace this teaching and rejoice in it. A practical outcome of this truth is that “ye are complete in Him.” The renowned reformer John Calvin wrote that this clause “does not mean that the perfection of Christ is transfused into us, but that there are in Him resources from which we may be filled, that nothing be wanting in us.” When we joyfully acknowledge the headship of Jesus, then, we can avail ourselves of the spiritual strength that He offers. Ephesians 5:18 compassionately commands, “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.” Because we need courage and character in our Christian walks, we need this continual filling of God the Holy Spirit. The availability of this constant help is just one significant and glorious result of the headship of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
