Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

The body of Jesus, “the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world” (Revelation 13:8), was placed in a sealed and guarded tomb (Matthew 27:57-66). Probably all of us have experienced the death of someone close to us. The day after a funeral or burial is difficult. We are exhausted, and we are unsettled and unsure of what to do. Treating it as just another day seems inappropriate, but doing nothing does not seem to be helpful. The silence of the sepulchre dominated the disciples, no doubt. However, in that quietness, Jesus was fulfilling prophecy: “He made His grave with the wicked, and with the rich in His death” (Isaiah 53:9a). Furthermore, He was preparing for the greatest miracle of all – His resurrection, as He had predicted and promised (Matthew 16:21; 18-19; 26:31-32). Perhaps God has seemed unduly silent in our difficulties and distresses. Let us recall the tomb of Jesus, and let us be confident that He is at work on our behalf.
