Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

We continue in our study of Isaiah 54:5: “For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is His name; and thy redeemer the Holy One of Israel; the God of the whole earth shall He be called.” These Messianic words are fulfilled in Jesus Christ, Who is our Maker, Husband (of the Church), and Almighty Lord. He is also our “Redeemer.” The primary idea behind redemption is that Jesus buys us back for Himself. He is our “Maker,” but we sinned in seeking our own selfish way. He is the Husband of the Church, but each one of us walked away from His love when we transgressed. I think of the account of Hosea, who married a bad girl named Gomer. She lived up to her evil reputation by being unfaithful to Hosea and leaving him. God then told Hosea to seek her out and bring her back; in fact, he actually had to pay a price to get her back (Hosea 3:1-5). This Biblical example is a picture of God’s redemptive love for all of us. His power as the Almighty Lord is employed for our eternal benefit. He has bought us back, not with “silver and gold” but with His “precious blood” (I Peter 1:18-19). This personal payment assures us that we have been everlastingly redeemed through faith in the finished work of our Savior, Christ Jesus.
