Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
Revelation 21 closes with these words: “And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it. And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there. And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it. And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life” (verses 24-27). We have previously studied the configuration of this heavenly city and commented on the security that the walls and gates signify. A further reason to see this city as a place of eternal protection is the specific promise that nothing with even a hint of corruption will ever be found there. We should also note the bustling activity: a place of boredom heaven is not. The fine preacher A. W. Tozer once said, in his memorable pointed style, “heaven is not a haven for lazy bums.” We shall “serve” (Revelation 22:3) together in ways that we cannot even imagine now. We shall worship as never before, for the current distinction between sacred and secular will vanish in the sanctified city of God. Think of the best day of your life (husbands, the correct answer is your wedding day). Every day in heaven will be better, for not even the slightest taint of sin will exist there. Instead, it will be “the holy city” (Revelation 21:2) indeed.
