Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
As we close our exhaustive study of Matthew 11:28-29, we know that Jesus does not exhaust us but remedies our restlessness with the offer of His rest: “Come unto Me, all ye that labour, and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” The primary focus of this rest is spiritual assurance and strength (“rest unto your souls”), but our lives cannot be compartmentalized. Thus, this offer of spiritual rest impacts our physical lives as well. Times of refreshment, including vacations, are Biblical. For example, after a strenuous stretch, Jesus said to His disciples, “Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while” (Mark 6:31). We need to find rest in worship, as well; remember that the original Sabbath was designed for both worship and rest. The two are connected Biblically. Throughout each day, we can find moments and places of rest. They are gifts from God, and we should cherish them.
