Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

Revelation 15 focuses our attention on Jesus and affirms that He is glorious: “And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God, and from His power; and no man was able to enter into the temple, till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled” (verse 7). This “glory” is a manifestation of His divine attributes (His perfections) and is an outward demonstration of Who He is. Even when we cannot see Him (like Hagar in her predicament in Genesis 16, which we briefly considered yesterday), He sees us (as Hagar learned). Habakkuk 1:13a proclaims, “Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity.” The absolute holiness of God is such that He is completely separate from sin. We cannot approach Him and, in fact, do not want to: Scripture describes us as His “enemies” (Romans 5:10). Yet, He not only looks upon us but also approaches us. Jesus – fully human and fully divine – came to us, walked amongst us, and died on the Cross in our places. He retained His holiness as He did these things, but He suffered beyond our ability to comprehend or articulate. Now, He loves us so much that He cannot take His eyes off us. Let us not take our eyes off Him.
