Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

Family love originates in the Triune Godhead. It is not surprising, then, that family mattered to Jesus when He walked amongst us. Although Jesus’ conception was divine and miraculous, His physical birth into a family was just like yours and mine (Luke 2:6-7). He experienced years of family life and “increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man” (Luke 2:52). Many of His miracles centered on family life: the wedding at Cana (the site of Jesus’ first miracle), the raisings of Lazarus and Jai rus’ daughter from the dead, and His healing of the boy that His disciples could not help (remember the father who said, “I believe, help thou mine unbelief” – Mark 9:24) are just a few of His works that focused on family. We think also of the Cross, where Jesus provided care for His grieving mother (John 19:26-27). Yes, family mattered to Jesus then, and it matters to Him now.
