Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
Jesus gives us His needed perspective. In Matthew 16:26, He said, “For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” Don’t you wish that everyone spoke this clearly and incisively? Jesus knows that we are easily distracted by the things of this world, and He knows that we are often attracted to the wrong things. However, Jesus cuts through all of our layers of self-justification, self-satisfaction, and just plain selfishness to confront us with everlasting realities. Would any rational person actually agree to trade away his eternal soul? Of course not! Yet, without a saving faith in Jesus, that is what we foolishly and unwittingly do. The direct words of Jesus are necessary to direct us to a different outlook, a new perspective that focuses us on what truly matters. May we seriously ponder these powerful questions of Jesus, and may each one of us be certain that our faith is in Jesus alone.
