Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
As we close this brief study of the groaning of Jesus on our behalfs and along with us, we must consider the Cross. There, we hear the groan that was wrenched from the whole-hurting heart of the Savior: “My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?” (Matthew 27:46). Jesus was quoting and fulfilling Psalm 22:1; the entire Psalm is Messianic. However, we should not think of Jesus’ words as a matter-of-fact recital of Scripture. No, His cry from the Cross reveals to us a passionate pain, a left-lonesome lamentation. May each one of us respond to this genuine grief with a heartfelt appreciation and a holy appropriation of the glorious gift of salvation that our Savior offers through His sorrow-filled sacrifice.
