Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
In Revelation 21:6b, our Savior God promises, “I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely [without cost].” These words bring us back to the Cross, where Jesus, suffering from the dehydration that was part of the cruelty of crucifixion, said, “I thirst” (John 19:28). His offer of “the water of life” is based upon the price that He paid for us there at Calvary. He gives “freely”, without cost, because He has already paid the cost by dying for us and in our places. Water provides refreshment; certainly heaven is a place of refreshment, of freshness and newness. Spiritually, the water imagery is a symbol of needed refreshment. Without fluid, we quickly die. Without Jesus’ full forgiveness, we are already “dead in trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1b). Note that this “water of life” is pictured as flowing from a “fountain” – that is, from a spring. This imagery focuses on the constant and abundant supply of blessings that will belong to each resident of heaven.
