Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
In Mark 13:31, Jesus draws an absolute disjunction: “Heaven and earth shall pass away: but My words shall not pass away.” Because the evil effect of man’s sin against God has tainted the entire universe, He will destroy the existing cosmos and replace it with “a new heaven and a new earth” (Revelation 21:1). What we observe around us is not permanent. However, God’s Word is lasting; it is both unchanging and unchangeable. Logically, since God is eternal and immutable, His words must also be both; for they are expressions of exactly Who He is and what He will do. The encouragement provided by the fact of the enduring nature of the Word of God cannot be overstated. The next time we open the Bible, let us remember and marvel that God is speaking to us, speaking to each individual. Each passage is precious; each verse is veracious. Much of its detailed prophecy has already been fulfilled, especially in our Lord’s Crucifixion and Resurrection. The rest of the prophecy will be – must be – fulfilled. All of God’s promises extended to us will extend into all eternity. All that is wrong “shall pass away,” but all that is right “shall not pass away.” Thank you, Jesus, for this enduring encouragement and righteous reassurance.
