Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
The ongoing invitation of Jesus to us encourages us to pursue a stronger relationship with Him. Thus, the words of Revelation 3:20 are particularly poignant. Here, Jesus says, “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me.” This verse is often used regarding salvation, but the context (written to Christians) and the use of “sup” indicates that this is a picture of Jesus desiring closer fellowship with His “sons and daughters” (II Corinthians 6:18). The irony is sad and strong: as we studied yesterday from Hebrews 4:16, we are to “come boldly” into His presence in prayer; we do have to stand at the door, knock, and wait for it to be opened. Jesus, as a true gentleman, offers us free access to Himself but will not force His way into our lives (even though He has every right to do so). The intensity of His desire for fellowship with us is humbling, for we should be the ones seeking such closeness. Our doors should always be wide open to Him! Lord, may we, as an old hymn says, “fling wide the portals of [our] heart[s]”!
