Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
The account of the daughter of Jairus (Mark 5:22-24) continues in verses 35-36: “While He yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house certain which said, ‘Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further?’ As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, ‘Be not afraid, only believe.’” When I read Scripture, I try to put myself into the place of the person (or people) in the story. Likely all of us can sense the sorrow of Jairus, for we have suffered the loss of ones dear to us. We must not misunderstand the words of Jesus here: “Only believe.” Only? It sounds like the hardest thing in the world! However, it is another evidence of the goodness of our Savior. First, Jairus could do nothing to help his deceased daughter. This “only” thus lifts the burden of responsibility from him. Second, Jesus’ simple words offer hope. He is the One Who is able to do the impossible, to perform a miracle of life. Let us learn to trust and rest in Him.
