Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

As we close our study of John 1:1-5 and its revelation of the creativity of Jesus, let us see how His creation of light (verses 4-5), language (verse 1 – He is “the Word”), and life (verse 4) helps us to better understand John 14:6. Here, Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no man cometh unto the Father but by me.” The “I am” construction points us to Exodus 3:14, where God states, “I AM THAT I AM.” This meaning of the name YAHWEH (usually translated LORD in the Old Testament) emphasizes that He is not dependent upon us or upon anyone or anything else. He is self-existent. Thus, His creativity is completely original. As “the Way,” Jesus provides the light that we need to reject the darkness of the broad “way that leadeth to destruction” (Matthew 7:13). Jesus as “the Truth” directs us to language, for He has spoken clearly to us, and every word of His is true. As “the Life,” He died on the Cross, taking our deserved punishment, and rose from the dead to offer each one of us life eternal. May each one of us be certain that our faith is fully and only in this Savior, Jesus Christ.
