Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

In a world where trust often turns to rust, it is a joy to know that Jesus can be trusted with my life. Perhaps there is no more surprising thought than that Jesus has a purpose for my life even though I have nothing to offer. Matthew 12:20-21, quoting from Isaiah 42:1-4, provides the words of God the Father about God the Son: “A bruised reed shall He not break, and smoking flax shall He not quench, till He send forth judgment unto victory. And in His name shall the Gentiles trust.” A battered and tattered reed has no use and would usually be discarded, for it is simply in the way. What does Jesus do with a bruised reed like me? He dies on the Cross to redeem me forever. In Isaiah 53:5, we read that “He was bruised for our iniquities.” Moreover, we find in Matthew 27:29-30 that He was actually bruised by a reed before He was taken to Calvary. Each one of us, then, must choose to let His bruises cover ours. We must trust “in His name.” When we do, each one of us will find that He has a divine purpose for each believer – now and eternally. What an unexpected and glorious outcome for “a bruised reed”!
