Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
A third “God is” statement (John 4:24; I John 4:8, 16) that helps us to better understand “the unsearchable riches of Christ” (Ephesians 3:8) is I John 1:5: “This then is the message which we have heard of Him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all.” The creation of light – the energy of the cosmos – brings us again to the Trinity; for Father, Son, and Spirit were in complete unity of purpose in providing light for us (Genesis 1:1-5; John 1:1-5). Furthermore, the absolute holiness of God (“in Him is no darkness at all”) is part of “the riches of His glory” (Ephesians 3:16) and places Him in complete contrast to the sinfulness of rebellious mankind. His nature of light can thus be seen by all and draws us to Him. Even as Jesus was dying on the Cross and darkness descended upon the earth (Luke 23:44), He was attracting people to Himself. Luke 23:47 records, “Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, ‘Certainly this was a righteous man.’” Even this hardened pagan soldier, a professional crucifier, knew that Jesus was different from sinful man. His light continues to reveal “the unsearchable riches of Christ.”
