Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

Jesus fills our lives with good things (I Timothy 6:17) because He fills our lives with His fullness. The evening before the Cross, Jesus said to His closest disciples, “Sorrow hath filled your heart” (John 16:6) because He had said that He must leave them. We all know that all-consuming feeling of bereftness. To counter this full grief, Jesus promised the gift of God the Holy Spirit indwelling each believer (John 16:7-14). This is fullness indeed! Jesus specifically called the Spirit “the Comforter” (verse 7). Yes, our overwhelming sorrow can be overwhelmed by this fullness of comfort. In II Corinthians 7:4, Paul testified, “Great is my boldness of speech toward you, great is my glorying of you: I am filled with comfort, I am exceeding joyful in all our tribulation.” The troubled church at Corinth had sorrowed Paul, and the persecution that Paul had experienced from unbelievers was physically painful and nearly lethal. Still, Paul found “comfort” from the Comforter and could freely and fully express his faith and fervent joy. May we “keep in step with the Spirit” (Galatians 5:25 – NIV) and begin to know the fullness of comfort promised by our Savior.
