Sermon Snippet – One One Influence

INTRODUCTION – Our ongoing consideration of “the simplicity that is in Christ” (II Corinthians 11:3) brings us to Proverbs 31:10-31. The singleness of purpose in this woman’s life is a model for all of us. Using these verses as a framework, let us think of three areas of godly influence. I remember three ladies in particular who have influenced me, and I encourage each of you to do the same.

1. WE LEARN CONCERN FOR OTHERS

The whole passage evidences active concern for family and for others. Verse 26 jumps out and reminds me of my second-grade teacher: “She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.” (What follows is a lengthy and somewhat discursive remembrance that does not summarize well. The full message is available on our Facebook account and on YouTube). May our concern be governed by “the law of kindness.”

2. WE LEARN CONTENTMENT

Again, the entire passage pictures a woman who is content with her life. Verse 25 reminds me of many ladies, but I especially think of my grandmother: “Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.” (Another lengthy story follows here.) “Godliness with contentment is great gain” (I Timothy 6:6). I am working on the “godliness” part, but “contentment” is a major part of my life.

3. WE LEARN CONSTANCY

Of course, I think of my wife (and not in the sense of constant nagging): “The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life” (verses 11-12). (Another story follows.) She certainly does not eat “the bread of idleness” (verse 27), working outside the home seven days a week and working every day to help me with the work of the church. I often call her my trophy wife, based on verse 10: “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.” Along with my Savior, she is the constant in my life.

CONCLUSION – Influence matters. The key is a strong spiritual life through faith in Jesus Christ (verse 30). Such influence is not too little (175 days in second grade), too late (at the end of my grandmother’s life), or too long (more than 40 years of life with my wife). Such influence is lasting, and each of us can be that one important influence in the life of another.
