Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
We close our study of Isaiah 54:5 today: “For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is His name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; the God of the whole earth shall He be called.” This Messianic verse affirms that Jesus is “the God of the whole earth”; that is, He is our Sovereign. He is in control over “the whole earth” and is thus in control of our lives wherever we are. Sometimes, it is hard to see Jesus’ sovereignty over our lives, especially when we are suffering. Two thoughts come to mind quickly. First, “we walk by faith, not by sight” (II Corinthians 5:7). This world is not our final home. Second, as we approach Good Friday, we find the greatest example of the difficulty of perceiving that Jesus is in control. Anyone viewing His arrest, illegal trial, and crucifixion could not comprehend that He was sovereign throughout that entire unfathomable ordeal. Only after His resurrection could they (and we) understand His purpose – making eternal life available to all who will simply trust in Him. Jesus was in control then, and He is in control right now.
