Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

Without God’s intervention, our restlessness will persist and exhaust us. However, He has intervened with the offer of His rest. In Matthew 11:28-29, Jesus, God the Son, invites all of us to find real rest: “Come unto Me, all ye that labour, and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” Yesterday, we saw that we need to submit to Jesus (“Take My yoke upon you”). Jesus also commands, “Learn of Me.” The preposition “of” means both instruction about and emulation of Jesus. Two years ago, I preached a sermon that partially answered the question, “Why are there four Gospels?” One reason is that we are presented with a more complete picture of Jesus. We do not need to speculate about what Jesus would do in a given situation, for we have ample examples of the words and works of Jesus. Because we can see so clearly how Jesus responded in a variety of circumstances, we can learn the right way to live. This right way will lead us to God’s rest.
