Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
The Virgin Birth of God the Son, Jesus Christ, assures us that He is completely holy, with no sin and with no inclination to sin. This absence of a sin nature (what theologians call His impeccability) sets Jesus apart as the Savior. All of us have a sin nature and quite vigorously exercise that nature. Romans 3:9-22 is one detailed Biblical passage that confirms this truth, culminating in the succinct summary of verse 23: “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” In His full humanity, Jesus retained His full deity, such that John 1:14 says, “The Word [Jesus] was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” Yes, we fall far short of that glory, but our failures do not diminish the glory of God. Rather, part of that glory is that Jesus saves us from the sad result of our sins – eternal separation from the immediate and loving presence of God. The Virgin Birth of Jesus is thus crucial to the new birth that each Christian experiences through faith in Jesus.
