Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

Like you, I love and value my family. I still don’t know why my wife cared enough for me to enter into marriage; of course, in retrospect, neither does she! We all know that love is both foundational and transformational. Certainly the love of Jesus brings us into His eternal family, and this love is to be celebrated. In Matthew 3:16-17, at the inauguration of Jesus’ Messianic ministry, we have clear Trinitarian teaching: One God in Three Persons – Father, Son, and Spirit. These relationships within the Trinity equal (see, for example, John 10:30: “I and the Father are one” – that is, are equal), for each member of the Trinity is fully God. The different roles, especially Father and Son, are revealed to us using family imagery. Since we are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27), we should not be surprised that the love of family is so central to our existence. In other words, family love originates within the Trinity and finds its ultimate expression there. This doctrine is extraordinarily comforting, for it confirms that the love of Jesus is not merely theoretical. No, it is real and personal and invites us into the family of God.
