Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
One of the more astonishing activities of Jesus is His readiness to speak to us. He is the King of communication. Of course, we have to be careful: it is true that Jesus is speaking to me, but He is not speaking just to me! That kind of claim is how cults start. Still, Jesus communicates in many ways. For example, He reveals Himself through nature. This general revelation is referenced in Psalm 19:1: “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth His handiwork.” The entire creation is an effect which necessitates a sufficient cause. Moreover, the careful design of the entire cosmos and its component parts argues for an intelligent and all-powerful Creator. In Romans 1:18-20, Paul argues persuasively that those who refuse to observe the hand of God in nature “are without excuse.” It is absurd to suggest that the universe’s structure is the result of randomness. Intelligent design requires an intelligent designer. For example, can anyone imagine seeing a fully functioning racecar and speculating that it roared around the track at 200 mph by chance? Since the creation is far more complex in its structures and systems than any manmade item, all nature proclaims the existence of God. A walk in the woods or an hour in the garden is thus a time of communion with the Creator Who communicates in part through His creation.
