Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
The murders of the two godly prophets by the Antichrist at the middle of the Tribulation period and the resulting and revolting display of rejoicing (Revelation 11:7-10) are repugnant to any decent human being. We are again confronted with the difficult question of why these two suffer death at the unholy hands of the “man of sin” (II Thessalonians 2:3). One reason is found in verse 8: these events occur in Jerusalem, “Where also our Lord was crucified.” This geographical setting places the historical fact of Jesus’ crucifixion on the Cross at the forefront. Properly considered, everything brings us back to our blessed Savior. Another reason is found in the entire context of these deaths, for we see what happens when the vast majority of people reject the goodness of God. Evil must then implacably ensue. Mankind without the Savior is irrevocably lost and will lose itself in vindictiveness, violence, and viciousness. As always, Jesus provides an alternative, for He is “the Way, the Truth, and the Life” (John 14:6).
