Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

The promise of Revelation 21:4 is one of great comfort: “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” As we studied yesterday, “all tears” in the original Greek is singular, meaning that our Lord is fully aware of each individual tear, cares about each one, and will ultimately deal with each teardrop. We should also remember the tears of God the Son, Jesus Christ, as He ministered on earth. At the tomb of His friend Lazarus, “Jesus wept” (John 11:35), for our Savior understood better than anyone the sad separating power of death. Hebrews 5:7 says of Jesus that “in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto Him that was able to save Him from death, and was heard in that He feared.” This verse likely refers to Jesus’ heart-rending experience in the Garden of Gethsemane (Matthew 26:39-44; also Luke 22:44). The One Who will “wipe away” every single tear knows what causes each teardrop. He can be trusted to evaporate each one.
