Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
As God seals up some of the information pertaining to the Tribulation period (Revelation 10:4), He is disclosing that He is transcendent. He also reveals other necessary insights about Himself to us. For example, in Revelation 10:5-7, we read, “And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven, and sware by Him [Who] liveth for ever and ever, Who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer: but in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as He hath declared to His servants the prophets.” At least five important aspects of our Lord’s character are conveyed here. First, He is absolutely authoritative, for even this “mighty angel” (verse 1) acknowledges Him. Second, He does not lie, for we “sware by” the truth – and Jesus is “the Truth” (John 14:6). Third, He is the Creator of all things. Fourth, He is not controlled by time but rather controls it (“there should be time no longer” literally means “there will be no more delay”). Fifth, He keeps His promises. A “mystery” is a truth that has not yet been disclosed but will be one day: it will be “finished” – that is, it will be accomplished. These blessed characteristics of our Lord are all deeply encouraging to believers. He remains the same, and He is worthy of our total trust.
