Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
“The Revelation of Jesus Christ” (1:1) is exactly that: it reveals the character of our Lord and Savior. An overview of Revelation 11 discloses an obvious truth: Jesus reigns. For example, verse 13 refers to “the God of heaven.” Heaven is a specific, prepared place (John 14:1-6), and Jesus is enthroned in ruling authority there, “appointed heir of all things” (Hebrews 1:2b) and seated “on the right hand of the Majesty on high” (Hebrews 1:3d). Moreover, heaven is an eternal place of power: to rule in heaven is to exercise universal power. Colossians 1:17b says of Jesus, “By Him all things consist [hold together].” We still do not really understand something as basic and foundational as gravity, nor can we adequately explain how an atom stays together. The Bible provides a reasonable answer: it is God the Son Who employs His might to keep everything from falling apart. His protective care for His creation is what we would logically expect from Jesus, and it is what is clearly revealed in Scripture and in science. Yes, Jesus reigns over all and is worthy of our worship.
