Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
We have been finding solace in the knowledge that Jesus is fully aware of our fears and tears and helps us to deal with both. In Psalm 56:8, David called out to God in striking terms: “Thou tellest my wanderings: put Thou my tears into Thy bottle: are they not in Thy book?” These three thoughts combine into one key concept: God knows every detail of our lives – including the hardest and worst things – and cares about each one. Yes, our tears are stored in God’s “bottle”; that is, He has collected each one. What will He do with them? We do not need to speculate, for Revelation 21:4 states that “God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” When I read this verse, I think of what the evangelist Vance Havner said as an elderly man. He was asked if he would like to live his life over. He responded in the negative: “I am too close to home.” That longing for heaven is one way that Jesus helps us to cope with the sad struggles of this life. All of our tears will be swept away, as will be the fears that cause them.
