Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
The fact that Jesus speaks to us should continue to astound us. That He employs just the right words to attract us personally should amaze us even further. In Matthew 13:3, Jesus began a series of parables that dealt with farming. He was in the countryside (verse 1) and spoke in terms that would be memorable to country folk. At that time, Israel was a primarily agragrian culture. Nearly every person had some understanding of agriculture, and for many it was their day-to-day work. Jesus’ employment of down-to-earth parables and proverbs reminds us that He literally came down to earth to communicate the words that we all need to hear. Jesus meets us where we are and meets our great need for forgiveness and salvation. It is our responsibility to receive the seed of His speech and be saved from self, sin, and Satan.
