Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

Last Wednesday, as we discussed that Jesus is the reasonable choice, we saw that those who reject Him “are without excuse” (Romans 1:20), for He provides ample facts to back up His absolute claim of John 14:6: “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life, no man can come unto the Father but by Me.” One way that man displays this rejection is through music. Have you noticed how many secular songs reference God? Some, of course, are openly antagonistic, blaming Him for the existence of evil but not denying His existence, like the people in John 8:58-59 who rightly understood Jesus’ “I am” statement as a claim to full deity but who then tried to stone Him to death. Other songs, including some that purport to be Christian, make Him into what men think He should be, endeavoring with words to create Him in our image; this approach is, of course, heretical. Still others know that people are interested in God and that music about Him sells. People are intrigued by what today is broadly termed “spirituality”; and like the money changers at the Temple in Jesus’ day, some will always try to turn religion into a business proposition. Yet, these negative uses of music point us to the fact that God “hath set the world [eternity] in their heart” (Ecclesiastes 3:11). In other words, we all have an innate sense that God exists. When we couple that fact with the ample external evidence that Jesus provides, we are indeed “without excuse.” Instead of excuses, we who trust in Jesus have answers. Yes, Jesus is the reasonable choice.
