Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

Revelation 15:3-4 is a passage that records music in heaven: “And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, ‘Great and marvellous are Thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are Thy ways, Thou King of saints. Who shall not fear Thee, O Lord, and glorify Thy name? For Thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before Thee; for Thy judgments are made manifest.’” This hymn rightly focuses us on the unchanging character of our Savior God. His actions are always perfectly consistent with His perfect attributes: “Great and marvellous are Thy works.” This general statement is a reason for thanks. A specific cause for our thanksgiving today is found in Psalm 139:14: “I will praise Thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are Thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.” Each one of us is a work of God (but not a piece of work). We are created in God’s image (Genesis 1:26-27); through faith in Jesus, we are recreated in His image (Romans 5:12-21). We certainly can be thankful this and every day that “we are [God’s] workmanship, created in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:10a).
