Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
We considered the words of Jesus in Mark 9:41 yesterday: “For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in My name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.” As we celebrate Thanksgiving, a couple of simple thoughts come to mind. First, “a cup of water” is a blessing. A traditional proverb says, “You don’t miss your water ‘til your well runs dry.” This folksy observation is true of everything that we have grown accustomed to employ and enjoy. We need to make real and regular efforts to be appreciative. Second, our blessings extend far beyond “a cup of water.” In the material realm, we are an extraordinarily blessed people. Even greater are God’s goodnesses to us in the spiritual and eternal realm, for we are “blessed with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3b). We “belong to Christ”; we are everlastingly secure in His omnipotent love. That fact alone is reason enough to be grateful this Thanksgiving Day.
