Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
Revelation 22:6 declares, “And he [the angel] said unto me [John], ‘These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent His angel to shew unto His servants the things which must shortly be done.’” The last clause is built upon in verse 7a: “Behold, I come quickly.” A couple of years ago, we considered some reasons why Christians sometimes do not think about our Lord’s return, even when we are to be “looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13). Since He has not returned during these two years, we will revisit this subject. One reason is that the prophetic words of the Bible are frequently neglected by preachers and teachers. I remember reading of a seminary student who was also a pastor. He told one of his professors that he never preached on prophecy because “prophecy distracts people from the present.” His wise and insightful mentor responded, “Then there is certainly a lot of distraction in the Scripture.” Part of the good news of the Gospel is that Jesus is coming back for His people. If we ignore this truth, then we can ignore any – even all – truth. Thus, it is the responsibility of all church leaders to include prophecy in their teaching, and it is the responsibility of all Christians to study about this “blessed hope.”
