Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

The words of Jesus in Revelation 22:13 are blessedly familiar: “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.” Both Revelation 1:8 and 21:6 include the first part of this verse. This description of Jesus points especially to His eternality and immutability. Hebrews 13:8 says simply, “Jesus Christ [is] the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” He always is, and He is always the same. Thus, we have a firm basis to believe – really, to know – that Jesus will “come quickly” for His own and will “reward” each believer (Revelation 22:2). Our faith is not based on wishful thinking; our wishes cannot match the goodness of God anyway. Rather, our faith rests on the revealed character of our Savior God. In Him we find security and surety, “rest unto [our] souls” (Matthew 11:29).
