Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
“The Revelation of Jesus Christ” (1:1) tells us of His eternality: “’I am Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the Ending,’ saith the Lord, ‘[Who] is, and [Who] was, and [Who] is to come, the Almighty.’” As we saw yesterday from Genesis 1:1 and John 1:1-3, Jesus has always existed in the past. Colossians 1:16 provides additional information: “For by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him, and for Him.” The Bible clearly teaches that there are “invisible” things – things that are non-material or incorporeal, including spirit beings such as angels and demons (fallen angels). Although many atheists cavalierly dismiss the existence of anything non-material, one of the most profound philosophical arguments for the existence of God is the transcendental argument (not to be confused with the pantheism of transcendentalism or with the mind-emptying of transcendental meditation). We all know that there are non-physical realities in the cosmos. For example, no one can deny the reality of numbers. However, they do not appear in the material world. There is no place where 1 wanders or 2 Texas two-steps or 3 threatens to thrum. Numbers are conceptual, but they are just as real as a reel or red-eye salmon. It is thus logical to attribute the existence of non-material items to something other than material. The Bible reveals that that something is Someone – our Savior, Jesus Christ. Things that transcend the physical direct us to God the Son, Who is truly the Transcendent One.
