Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
While Jesus is building the Church and each Christian, He is also constructing a permanent place for us. One of the reasons that Jesus is not physically with us (or that we are not with Him) is that He is putting the final, loving touches on our heavenly home. John 14:1-6 is a well-known passage that records the ever-creative desire of Jesus. Verse 2 specifically states the mission of our Savior: “I go to prepare a place for you.” The irony is heart-rending. Jesus as an earthly carpenter had “no place to lay His head” (Matthew 8:20), yet He is lavishing His love on us by building our eternal home. I often say that it is remarkable that Jesus would permit us to even visit heaven, for we do not deserve to be in His home. However, He is doing more than letting us drop by for a while; He is making His home our home – forever. This everlasting construction is consistent with our Lord’s eternal and creative character. I like where I live now, but it will be better – far better – farther on.
