Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
“The Revelation of Jesus Christ” (1:1) reveals that our Savior is omnipotent: “’I am Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the Ending,’ saith the Lord, ‘[Who] is, and [Who] was, and [Who] is to come, the Almighty’” (1:8). Since omnipotence is a characteristic of God alone, the use of “the Almighty” by Jesus is an absolute claim of His full divinity. His mighty works, especially His Resurrection, authenticate this claim. The Greek word translated “Almighty” is a composite word that literally means “the One Who has His hand on everything.” What a compelling and comforting reality that definition conveys! We will return to this subject a couple of months from now, for this Greek word is found eight more times in the book of Revelation. For now, let us know that Jesus is the One Who has His hand on everything in our lives. He is aware of our every challenge and is already at work. Without His power, we would be helpless, doomed to fail in all that matters. With His power, though, we can live differently and thus make a positive difference in this dark and decaying world.
