Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

Revelation 19:10 provides a cautionary tale to all Christians: “And I [John] fell at his [the angel’s] feet to worship him. And he said unto me, ‘See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.’” The Apostle John physically walked with Jesus for more than three years and spiritually walked with Him for more than sixty years. Yet, here he makes a grievous error in giving worship to this angel – and then has to write it down! Even though he was an apostle, John still possessed a sin nature; this fallen nature was crucial to his falling down before anyone other than the Triune God. The awesome nature of the vision undoubtedly unsettled John, making it hard for him to think and respond clearly. Still, idolatry is sin, and John needed to be reproved by this “fellowservant.” When we bow down in any way to anything or anybody, we are breaking the first of the Ten Commandments and are placing ourselves in peril of violating the other commands. We need to be careful, for if John could fail (and he did), then we can also fail.
