Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
Each attribute of Jesus Christ is absolute, including His faithfulness, truthfulness, and righteousness (Revelation 19:11). Revelation 19:12a references the fullness of His knowledge: “His eyes were as a flame of fire.” The anthropomorphic use of “eyes” is a reference to God’s omniscience. In Zechariah 4:10, we read that “they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth.” His fullness of knowledge extends to believers: “Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear Him, upon them that hope in His mercy” (Psalm 33:18). When combined with the imagery of “a flame of fire,” our Savior’s ongoing purification of us is in view; Revelation 1:14 and 2:18 are speaking of the Church and the need for growth in personal sanctification. Hebrews 4:13 states, “There is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open of Him to Whom we must give account.” Thus, the fullness of our Lord’s knowledge also extends to unbelievers, and the fire imagery becomes a symbol of righteous judgment. Jesus will return to execute this justice – a justice that will be based entirely upon facts. The judgment upon Antichrist and his singing sycophants is therefore fully merited.
