Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

We return today to the words about Jesus in Isaiah 54:5: “For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is His name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; the God of the whole earth shall He be called.” Ephesians 5:22-33 specifically demonstrates how Jesus fulfills the prophetic role as the Husband of the Church. On Saturday, from verse 25, we saw that Jesus revealed His love by sacrificing Himself for us. Verse 26 provides one purpose behind this remarkable self-sacrifice: “That He might sanctify and cleanse it [the Church] with the washing of water by the word.” Husbands are to be leaders (verse 23 – “the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church”); Jesus is the best leader – the perfect leader – and always leads us in the right direction. This direction points us to heaven, as verse 27 clarifies: “That He might present it to Himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.” This great and grand purpose cannot be thwarted, for Jesus does all things well.
