Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
Perhaps nothing better reveals the difference between God and man than time. II Peter 3:8-9 is addressed directly to Christians and discusses the impact that the relationship of God to time has on us. Verse 8 says, “But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.” Note the twofold use of “as,” indicating that a non-literal comparison is being used. What is being taught here is that God is above time; it has no effect, no influence, upon Him. The coming of God the Son, Jesus Christ, is thus even more remarkable in that for a period of more than thirty years He placed Himself within our time. Because Jesus is fully God, He is eternal, with no beginning and no end (Revelation 1:8). In practical terms, then, Jesus never hurries, never has to catch up, is never too busy. In personal terms, Jesus is never too busy for us. Sadly, sometimes we think that we are too busy for Him. Clearly, His perspective on time is the correct one. II Corinthians 4:17 reminds us, “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.” Just as the shackles of sin will vanish when we enter heaven, so will the chains of confining time.
