Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
Nothing or nobody is as exciting as Jesus. It may be a bit surprising, then, that Jesus’ great goal for us in this life does not focus on excitement. I Timothy 2:2-3 instructs us to pray “for kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour.” I Thessalonians 4:11 adds, “study to be quiet, and to do [mind] your own business.” One way, then, to live a quiet and peaceable life is to make a concerted effort to mind our own business. As an old song says, “Mind your own business, and you won’t be minding mine!” A practical application of this Biblical command is to limit our involvement with social media. Too much of social media falls into two categories: “My life is so much better than yours; here, take a look,” or “you’re stupid.” May we refrain from such negative interactions in our desire for God’s desire that we live quiet and peaceable lives.
