Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
When we think of fathers, we often think of work, as we considered Saturday. I never heard my father complain about working, and I admire him for that attitude. We also think of discipline – needed discipline. My wife would threaten my boys with, “Wait till your father gets home!” She was much more terrifying than I was (and she still is). Usually, my method of correction was to make the boys hug their mother. That way, she shared in their punishment! Since Jesus is our “Everlasting Father” (Isaiah 9:6), we would expect appropriate discipline. In Matthew 16:21-23, Jesus sternly rebukes Peter, the leader of the disciples. There is a reason why we are called Christians, not Peterians! We follow Christ Jesus, not a mere man. Because He is the “Everlasting Father” to His spiritual children, we can trust that His reproof and correction are necessary and beneficial.
