Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
In Mark 14:13b-15, Jesus gives specific instruction to two of His disciples: “Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him. And wheresoever he shall go in, say ye to the goodman of the house, ‘The Master saith, “Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with My disciples?”’ And he will shew you a large upper room furnished and prepared: there make ready for us.” Some have suggested that Jesus had previously arranged to have this room available, but there is no indication that such an arrangement existed. Did He also tell a man to walk around Jerusalem carrying water (normally a job performed by a woman) until two men followed him into his own home? Such a scenario is absurd. Thus, we must dismiss the speculative idea that Jesus had concocted this elaborate scheme. Instead, we should marvel at His omniscience and rejoice in the exact fulfillment of His words: “And His disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as He had said unto them: and they made ready the passover” (verse 16). No doubt all of the disciples (including traitorous Judas) heard of this precise fulfillment, and all of them actually sat down at the prepared table in this upper room. Thus, each disciple experienced the certainty that Jesus was aware of every detail of life – and we can be equally certain today that he knows and cares about all aspects of our lives.
