Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
We return today to our study of the use of “Amen” in the last book of the Bible. Revelation 7:12 finds the angels and the elders (representatives of the Church, which has been raptured to heaven prior to the onset of the Tribulation) before God’s throne, “Saying, ‘Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.’” This response is different from others in that it both begins and ends with “Amen.” Two observations come to my mind. First, the repetition reminds us that agreeing with our Savior God is not a one-time event. We do not casually agree and then proceed as though nothing significant has happened. Rather, our agreement is to be both engaged and ongoing. Second, we see that heaven will never be a mundane place. Even the usage of the same simple word will not become trite. Whenever “Amen” is used and wherever it is employed in a sentence or sung there, it never becomes a mere platitude. Instead, each “Amen” is a new response to a fresh revelation of our Savior God’s goodness and greatness. Those looking for boredom will not find it in heaven.
