Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
The Bible is clear that we cannot be eternally saved without the direct intervention of God. He must act on our behalf, and we must respond to Him and to His gracious actions. We have spent some time studying Revelation 17:14: “These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for He is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with Him are called, and chosen, and faithful.” The salvific teaching is plain: it is Jesus, God the Son, Who calls and chooses. Of course, God the Father is intimately involved in salvation as well: Jesus said, “No man can come to Me, except the Father [Who] hath sent Me draw him” (John 6:44a). Likewise, God the Holy Spirit is fully engaged in this “so great [a] salvation” (Hebrews 2:3): as Jesus said in John 16:13a, “When He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth.” This drawing and guiding is essential, for “there is none that seeketh after God” (Romans 3:11b). We will not find salvation on our own; we need to be found by “the Author and Finisher of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2). I think of the chorus of an old Gospel song: “Calling you, calling you, can’t you hear the blessed Savior calling you?” If you have never asked Jesus to save you from your sins unto eternal life, you can be certain that He is calling you right now. Please respond to His merciful and gracious call by calling upon Him as Savior today. As the same song says, “He will take you by the hand and lead you to that Promised Land.” May we all be sure that we “are with Him.”
