Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
We return today to John 15:16, where we see that Jesus says, “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you.” Jesus chose me because I needed to be chosen. Furthermore, He chose me because He could see what I can be and what I will be one day. Moreover, Jesus chose me because… well, just because. What I mean is that this choice was not a sudden, snap decision; it is routed in the very nature of God. Ephesians 1:4 says in part, “He hath chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world.” This passage reveals that the character of God has always been directed to saving us. His lovingkindness is not a response to us; no, it is Who He is. Think of His pursuit of us! Think of His pursuit of you! I would encourage each one of us to say aloud, “Jesus chose me.” It is profoundly and honestly humbling to know that Jesus chose me. How can any of us be certain, though? There is only one way. Each of us must take from Him what He wants to give – eternal life through faith in Jesus. If you receive from Him what He freely offers, then you will know that He has chosen you before the foundation of the world.
