Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
Last week, we considered that Jesus is the winner in the broadest sense of the word, sovereign over time, events, and prophecy. He is also the winner in the narrowest sense of the word. “Narrowest” might sound negative, but with Jesus it is a positive description. The message of the “Revelation of Jesus Christ” (1:1) is not only about Him but also “from Jesus Christ, Who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto Him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and hath made us kings and priests unto God and His Father; to Him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen” (1:5-6). Because Jesus is sovereign over all time and all people, He is also in control of my life and your life. Thus, He is the winner in the blessedly narrow sense of individual, personal salvation. Each believer in Jesus has been won from sin, Satan, hell, and the second death of spiritual separation from God (Revelation 20:13-15). Surely, as a Gospel hymn exults, there is “victory in Jesus.”
